ABOUT
Purpose
At universities, research institutes, and corporate laboratories, the "seeds" of science and technology are being born, and it takes a lot of time and effort before they sprout into practical applications. The "TECH PLANTER" organized by Leave a Nest with its partner companies is an ecosystem that aims to discover these seeds and serve as a planter to turn them into businesses. Our program in MALAYSIA aimed at discovering and nurturing Real Tech seeds and entrepreneurs.
Target
  • Early stage startups and pre-startup researchers’ team or individual in Real Tech Field
  • Mature startups or SMEs seeking collaborators are also welcome, even if they are close to mass production or PMF establishment.
  • Visionaries that aim to change the world and/or their own country to a better place based on the science and tech based seeds
  • Those who are interested in the Japanese market or collaboration with Japanese corporations.

    Mr. Abdul Hakim Sahidi
    Mr. Abdul Hakim Bin Sahidi is one of the pioneer members of Leave a Nest Malaysia, having joined the company in 2016. Since then, he has played a crucial role in establishing and leading a passionate team in the country. His primary focus lies in business and technological advancements that have the potential to create significant impacts on society. With his extensive experience, Mr. Abdul Hakim has been actively involved in mentoring researchers and startups in both Malaysia and Indonesia. He plays a vital role in bridging them with the right partners, both locally and from Japan, to facilitate collaboration and growth opportunities. Through his efforts, he aims to nurture and cultivate a new generation of technopreneurs in Malaysia, while also supporting the implementation of meaningful technologies that can benefit society as a whole.
  • Mr. Azizul Abdul Hamid
    Portfolio Manager, Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd
    Mr. Azizul Abdul Hamid
    Azizul Abdul Hamid joined Cradle in 2015, and is currently a Portfolio Manager. An accounting graduate from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM, Azizul is also is a member of the Malaysia Institute of Accountant (MIA). Presently, Azizul is actively monitoring Cradle’s grant recipients under the CIP grant programme; CIP SPARK, CIP SPRINT and INNOVATHON. Azizul posseses a diverse background mainly in Fund Management, Finance and Accounting and Banking. He is actively working on developing early stages of business solution and business model to assist Cradle grant recipients. With 12-years of experience in funding and investment, Azizul believes in giving back by reaching out to aspiring entrepreneurs/startup founders and help them to achieve their goals.
  • Dr. Khairul Hafiz Sharkawi
    Head of Research and Development, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad
    Dr. Khairul Hafiz Sharkawi
    Dr. Khairul Hafiz Sharkawi is the Head of Research and Development where his team focuses on building Sarawak digital research and development capabilities and innovation ecosystem through government-university-industry collaboration. He received his PhD in Geoinformatics (3D GIS) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He has extensive experience as a researcher and well versed in planning, executing, consultation and managing research and development projects related to GIS. He has published a number of scientific publications and member of the Programme Committee for several international conferences.
  • Mr. Mohd Najib Jaafar
    Senior Director, Strategic Delivery, TERAJU
    Mr. Mohd Najib Jaafar
    Mohd Najib Jaafar is a finance professional and garners over 18 years of experiences, not only in finance but also in banking, and capital markets. His
    impressive background extends to entrepreneurship development and funding programs. In 2015, he joined TERAJU and currently holds the position of Senior Director for the Strategic Delivery Department. Under his adept leadership, he successfully managed Facilitation Fund (FF) TERAJU, valued at RM2.0 billion. During his tenure, 550 projects received approval, resulting in a total investment of RM14.81 billion and the creation of over 10,000 jobs.Notable initiatives under his purview include overseeing programs like Syarikat Bumiputera Berprestasi Tinggi (TERAS) and the launch of the RM1.0 billion Dana Kemakmuran Bumiputera (DKB) in 2021. This initiative provides grants of up to RM2.0 million for qualified Bumiputera companies across various sectors.
  • Ms. Xelia Tong

    Ms. Xelia Tong
    Xelia has always been in Malaysia’s funding ecosystem, starting her stint with Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad (“MDV”), a 100% owned entity of the Ministry of Finance that provides technology related project funding. During her time with MDV, she was instrumental in bringing in an international games development company to set up a world class games development centre in Malaysia. She was hired by Bank Simpanan Nasional (”BSN”)(Malaysia’s National Savings Bank) to manage a RM 200m Creative Industry Fund. Her role as the Vice President of Investment and Head of Angel Tax Incentive in Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (“Cradle”), an early stage technology start-up funding agency saw her facilitating the funding of 185 entrepreneurs, some of whom went on to raise in total close to RM 90m from both local and foreign investors. She is currently a Venture Partner for ScaleUp Malaysia, a growth stage accelerator and have recently been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of the leading equity crowdfunding platform in Malaysia, PitchIN. She also serves on the Council of Malaysia Business Angel Network and an Industry Partner to MSW Ventures, Singapore.
  • Mr. Hiyoku Motomura
    Deputy Manager, Japan Railway East
    Mr. Hiyoku Motomura
    Hiyoku Motomura joined East Japan Railway Company in 2006. Since 2016, he has been in charge of the Takanawa Gateway City project, which is one of the largest real estate development projects in Tokyo. From 2022 to 2023, he transferred to Silicon Valley to participate in a program provided by Silicon Valley based VC to learn how to invest in startups and how to connect large corporates and startups. Leveraging his experience in Silicon Valley, after returning to Japan he has been leading the creation of a startup ecosystem in Takanawa Gateway City Project. He also engaged in the establishment of CVC in Singapore called JRE Ventures.

    Dr. Saranpal Singh
    Dr. Saranpal, brings a wealth of expertise in biological sciences to his role, driving forward innovative and cutting-edge R&D initiatives at Mitsui Chemicals Group. Using biomaterials, technologies and know-how of Mitsui Chemicals Group, he spearheads innovation. Working in close collaboration with start-ups, universities, and industrial partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other regions of the Asia Pacific, he strategically addresses key challenges. Through these concerted efforts, Dr. Saranpal adeptly translates and integrates outcomes into Mitsui Chemical’s Lifecare and Healthcare business domain.
  • Ms. Shoko Suzuki
    Managing Director and CEO, Real Tech Holdings Singapore
    Ms. Shoko Suzuki
    Joined RTHD Singapore in 2023 as Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer overseeing fund strategy, establishment of growth acceleration ecosystem, performance management, capital planning and fundraising. Prior to joining Real Tech, worked at a US-based fund and managed over $1bn in biotech / healthcare investments based in Los Angeles then London. After consulting at IFC in development finance across Africa, Middle East and Asia, co-founded a renewable energy venture, scaled and exited, and moved to Singapore to engage in venture investment and venture building as CFO. Most recently, worked as Chief Transformation Officer at a FTSE 100 multinational company in charge of innovation, intrapreneurship, ESG strategy and execution. BA in General Systems Studies from University of Tokyo, MBA from INSEAD, Master in Corporate Finance from SDA Bocconi.

    Dr. Nurarina Ayuni received her Ph.D in Aquatic Biotechnology and joined R&D division of Euglena Malaysia Sdn. Bhd in 2023. With a focus on waste-to-wealth utilization of nutrients, she specializes in sustainable microalgae cultivation for biofuel development. Her expertise lies in optimizing cultivation methods to maximize biomass production while minimizing resource usage. Through her research at Euglena Malaysia, she is committed to create eco-friendly alternatives that benefit society and the planet, aligning with Euglena's company commitment to sustainability and technological innovation.
